Tottenham Hotspur were not favourites to win away to Italian Club Udinese in their opening UEFA cup game, but would have been grateful for it. A win would have perhaps provided some much needed confidence and strength to climb away from probably the London club's worst season of all time.
Alas, it was not to be as, second in Serie A, Udinese won the game 2-0.
Tottenham started quite brightly with chances in the 15th minute with a saved header from Bent and then a tight angled shot from Lennon in the 20th. It looked as if Spurs may get something... but then the Penalty came two minutes later courtesy of a mad ball control blunder by Goalkeeper Gomez. It has to be said, Gomez looked pretty dodgy most of the Evening.
Udinese Striker, Di Natale, scored from the spot and as so often is the case this season, when Spurs go behind, you just can't see them coming back.
To follow the familiar pattern of recent games, midfielder O'Hara got himself sent off the pitch for two clumsy tackles in short succession. Down to ten men, yet again, the task now was hopeless.
Giovani dos Santos came on as a Tottenham substitute in the 64th minute and provided some attacking flair, but by this time Udinese were well in control and scored a second goal in the 86th.
It was another, all round miserable day for Tottenham. Not only losing, but having a man sent off also. Spanish Manager, Juande Ramos, must be really feeling the pressure at the moment, and this result will not ease matters. Tottenham next play in the Premiership at Home to Bolton on the 25th October. Another defeat would be disastrous. But with Defoe, Keane and Berbatov sold, who is going to get the goals?
